Figure Drawing

The Guitar Player By Andre Whitten (age 13)

This project first involved sketching a student who was modelling with a guitar for the rest of the class.

During this lesson we focused on:

  • doing thumb nail composition sketches before choosing an angle and frame of reference,
  • using the whole page or filling the page,
  • looking at and for the big shapes, being bold,
  • later focusing on detail,
  • really looking at the subject,
  • interpreting what you see,
  • and taking risks -not avoiding tricky parts...

The second focus was on shading the sketches,
looking at:

  • darks and lights,
  • use of the pencil,
  • how there are no lines in real life simply borders where one tone or shade meets another.

The third stage involved looking at expressionist and cubist works of other artists. Then having ago at interpreting their compositions in the same manner. Working from their sketches or on top of photocopies of their sketches to draw out and extend key lines and shapes.

Finally working on pastel blending...
